VMware Carbon Black participates in the developer programs of the operating system vendors that our agents and sensors support. This participation gives us an early start on validating our products and making necessary changes before they become generally available. However, sometimes the operating system vendor makes changes between the last developer/beta build and the generally available build; this can adversely affect our agent and sensor functionality.

To ensure compatibility, we perform final validation when the operating system becomes generally available. Depending on the changes in the final version of the operating system, the time between its release and VMware Carbon Black's support of the operating system varies. This variation is indicated in the following target service levels:

  • VMware Carbon Black App Control (formerly Carbon Black Protection)
    • Maintenance releases (service packs) - Target 30 days
    • Minor releases (Red Hat 6.6 to 6.7, Mac OS 10.10.4 to 10.10.5) – Target 30 days
    • Major releases (Windows 8.x to Windows 10, Mac OS 10.10 to 10.11) – Target 90 days
  • VMware Carbon Black EDR (formerly Carbon Black Response)
    • Maintenance releases (service packs) – Target 15 days
    • Minor releases (Red Hat 6.6 to 6.7, Mac OS 10.10.4 to 10.10.5) – Target 30 days
    • Major releases (Windows 8.x to Windows 10, Mac OS 10.10 to 10.11 or 10.15 to 11.0) – Target 45 days
  • VMware Carbon Black Cloud
    • Maintenance releases (service packs) – Target 15 days
    • Minor releases (Red Hat 6.6 to 6.7, Mac OS 10.15.4 to 10.15.5) – Target 30 days
    • Major releases (Windows 8.x to Windows 10, macOS 10.15 to 11) – Target 45 days
  • Linux Kernels
    • Linux kernel maintenance updates within the same family (for example, 2.6.32-504) are supported immediately and then verified within two weeks after they are released. No App Control or EDR updates are necessary.
    • Support for major OS releases is delivered in the latest versions of CB Protection and CB EDR only.
