How Does the New Feature Idea Process Work in Idea Central?

How Does the New Feature Idea Process Work in Idea Central?

Updated 2/23/2021

There is a new process for submitting feature requests for Carbon Black Cloud products.  You may read more here.

--------------------------------------

Customer input is an essential part of how Carbon Black prioritizes work on new and existing features as well as fixing bugs. We incorporate data from support, feedback from customer success managers (CSMs) as well as from the UEX directly. Learn more about posting new ideas and the recent changes to Idea Central.

The goal of the Idea Central forum is to provide:

  • Insight into what our Product team is working on right now and a way for you to give the Product team timely feedback to help guide their decisions
  • An opportunity to share ideas about anything to do with Carbon Black products, whether Product is focusing on that area of the application right now or not.

Who can submit ideas?

All registered users may submit an idea. All customers can create an account for free and become a registered user.  Carbon Black employees may submit ideas as well.

How are ideas processed?

The Carbon Black Product team reviews new submissions.

  • Please allow time for the review process to occur before sharing your idea link with others.
  • A new idea may be pulled out of voting if the idea is incomplete or needs clarification from the contributor.
  • The Product team may also apply organizational tags, or archive any idea with explanation.

How long are ideas open for vote?

Ideas are open for six months. Following six months, ideas in the top 10th percentile of vote will remain in the general forum and open for voting. Ideas in the bottom 90th percentile will be archived and moved out of the general forum which makes room for new ideas. The archive process will occur monthly.

Open for Voting

Ideas are open for six months. Following six months, ideas in the top 10th percentile of vote will remain in the general forum. Ideas in the bottom 90th percentile will be archived and moved out of the general forum, which makes room for new ideas. The archive process will occur monthly, on the first Wednesday of each month.

Product Radar

Product Radar ideas have been selected by the Product team for official response. These ideas may be selected because of their vote count, market group, overall view count, comments, or other factors. These ideas represent a pool of our wish-list items as much as yours! We would love to build everything, but we want to put as much focus as possible on the features that will have the most impact.

In Development

In Development ideas are being worked on or plan to be worked on in the next 3 months. Most of these ideas will be linked to a Product priority, which include related ideas and other activities around development. If we mark an idea as being 'In Development', we will comment and say whether the idea might be implemented in the next quarter or whether we know it will be more long term.

In Beta

In Beta ideas have been implemented and are being evaluated in Beta by customers who have volunteered to participate.

Archived (Not Currently Planned)

Archived ideas may have fallen short of rising to the top in six months or it may have been marked as 'not planned.' We will comment and provide clear reasons for why an idea has been archived. Some ideas cannot be developed because of a technical limitation. Others do not fit with overall product direction, or do not warrant the resources they would take to implement, relative to other requests.

Released

Released ideas have been implemented and deployed to production.

Can I resubmit an idea after it is archived?

Yes, ideas can be resubmitted. As our users’ needs change, an archived idea today may resurface with greater momentum months from now.  Our goal is to foster a place for ideas to surface organically and encourage community members to support those they believe are most relevant and timely.

What is 'The Archive'?

Honoring our commitment to not delete Community content, your idea may have made the journey to the Archive because of one of the following factors:

  • The idea was not in the top 10 percentile of votes within its lifespan
  • The idea is a duplicate
  • The idea contained multiple ideas in one submission (aka: kitchen sink)
  • The idea may now be obsolete

Although an idea may be archived, this does not mean that it is not a good idea.  It means that the idea fell outside of the top 10% of requested ideas (which is what our Voice of Customer teams will be evaluating for the next PI).  If your idea(s) are archived, you may submit them again. If it breaks the top 10%, we will evaluate it for the next PI. We fully expect that as our users’ needs change, an archived idea today may resurface with greater momentum in the quarters to come.  Archiving ideas helps all of us to gauge what’s particularly important in a six-month window of time, and makes room for new ideas.

Are there any considerations for voting on feature ideas?

All ideas are equally considered, but the number of votes each idea receives will help Carbon Black to better prioritize our users’ needs.  Your continued support and participation in the User Exchange forums are very valuable to Carbon Black products, and we encourage you to keep sharing, commenting, and voting.

How do I Create an Idea/Feature Request?

I have few questions.

(1) When resubmitting an archived Idea, is it possible to reuse the archived Idea itself or do I have to create it as new Idea with same content/title?

(2) If archived Idea is reusable, could the old votes be succeed-able or does it start with zero votes?

Regards,

  Haro

Hi haro,

I may be wrong on this, but from what I understand, the archived Idea would not be pulled out of the archive, so you would need to create a new Idea with the same information. The votes would not be transferred from the old one to the new, but I would highly recommend sharing the Ideas added to get additional visibility within the community.

Hi haro and jthoming

Yes, that's right.  If an idea is archived, it means that the idea fell outside of the top 10% of requested ideas (which is what our Voice of Customer teams will be evaluating for the next quarter).  If your idea(s) are archived, you may submit them again, but it would need to be submitted as a new post and the number of votes would start at zero.  If you submit an idea that is already in "Product Radar," "In Development," or is a duplicate of an idea that is "Open for Voting," then we will notify you that another identical idea already exists.  If your newly posted idea breaks the top 10% during a different 6-month period, we will evaluate it for the next quarter.  We fully expect that as our users’ needs change, an archived idea today may resurface with greater momentum in the quarters to come.  We'll continue to evaluate the new process over time.  haro if you'd like to provide input into how the process evolves over time, I'd be happy to reach out to you directly for additional feedback.  Let us know if you have any other questions about the new process, and thank you for sharing your ideas to help us build better products.

Hi sara_m

Thank you for the clarification and detailed description on the process.

I have another question.

How long will the archived idea be available/open to the public before taken off the list?

When you are re-submitting an archived idea, you may want to reference/copy&paste old item to save your time.

Regards,

Haro

Hi haro

Great question!  We are committed to keeping all archived ideas accessible to the UeX community.  In the short term, ideas will be marked as archived, but they'll still be available to view in Idea Central, along with all of the other ideas.  In the future, we'd like to move archived ideas into a separate archive space, which will help keep Idea Central easier to navigate through.  If we do create a separate archive space in the future, you'll still be able to view all of the previously submitted ideas.  We definitely want to make sure it's easy for you to copy/paste any of the older ideas. If you have other ideas or questions, please keep them coming!
