All Products: How to Setup a Windows Machine for Full Memory Dump

Environment

  • All Products
  • Microsoft Windows: All Supported Versions

Objective

To configure Windows for a Full Memory Dump.

Resolution

  1. Open Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings.
  2. Choose the Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery > Settings and verify:
    • Write debugging information: Complete Memory Dump.
    • Dump file: Path specified exists and has enough free space.
  3. Select OK to set, then Apply in the System Properties page

Additional Notes

  • A full memory dump provides support with more visibility into the cause of the crash or cause of high memory usage
  • minidumps generally do not provide enough information to get a root cause
