Carbon Black Cloud: How To Check Current Hostname (macOS)

Carbon Black Cloud: How To Check Current Hostname (macOS)

Environment

  • Carbon Black Cloud Sensor: All Versions
  • Apple macOS: All Supported Versions

Objective

Explain the steps to verify the current hostname of a Mac device/endpoint

Resolution

  1. Connect to desired machine
  2. Launch Terminal
  3. Check current value of kern.hostname
    sysctl -a kern.hostname
  4. Double-check current hostname
    /bin/hostname

Additional Notes

  • These commands can be used to verify or check the current hostname of a Mac computer in case there are concerns over the name displayed with Events in the Carbon Black Cloud Console
  • By using these different commands you are getting the hostname information from different subsystems which should normally be in sync
  • Any discrepancies should be reviewed further by a Systems Administrator
