Environment
- Carbon Black Cloud Sensor: All Versions
- Apple macOS: All Supported Versions
Objective
Explain the steps to verify the current hostname of a Mac device/endpoint
Resolution
- Connect to desired machine
- Launch Terminal
- Check current value of kern.hostname
sysctl -a kern.hostname
- Double-check current hostname
/bin/hostname
Additional Notes
- These commands can be used to verify or check the current hostname of a Mac computer in case there are concerns over the name displayed with Events in the Carbon Black Cloud Console
- By using these different commands you are getting the hostname information from different subsystems which should normally be in sync
- Any discrepancies should be reviewed further by a Systems Administrator
