Tamper protect causes 7.0.1 to 7.2.0 Agent update to fail

Issue

Bit9 7.0.1.x agent upgrade to 7.2.0 agent fails with error message in the Bit9 Console.

 

Symptoms

The error message of the failure:  \\?\globalroot\device\harddiskvolume2\windows\syswow64\msiexec.exe User[NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM]. Unmanaged install ended without stopping the agent.

 

Cause

Issue is caused by the 7.2.0 Tamper Protection not allowing the Bit9 services to stop in the amount of time necessary for the upgrade to complete successfully.

 

Solution

Disable the tamper protection on the agent before upgrading it so the services on the agent can stop in the allowed amount of time. You can disable tamper protection on the agent from the console by doing the following:

  1. From the Bit9 Console click on Assets > Computers.
  2. Click on the name of the Computer you are going to upgrade the agent on.
  3. On the right hand column, under Advanced > click on Disable Tamper Protection.

 

Important Note(s)

Remember to re-enable tamper protection after the agent is successfully upgraded.
