The appliance is a package of software that lives on the vSphere side. It is a virtual machine that uses Photon OS and an application to route data from vSphere to the Carbon Black Cloud.
It collects the inventory from VC and shows any endpoints without the sensor under the Inventory > Workloads > Not Enabled tab.
The appliance helps to drive the installation workflow on sensors that do not currently have it.
