App Control: How to Export and Import a Self-Signed Certificate for Disconnected Devices

Environment

  • App Control Server: All Supported Versions
  • App Control Agent: All Supported Versions

Objective

How to export, and import a self signed agent communication certificate.

Resolution

Exporting from the App Control Server:
  1. On the App Control server navigate to Start > Run > and type MMC
  2. In the MMC Window select File > Add Remove Snap-Ins
  3. Select Certificates and click Add
  4. Select Computer Account and next
  5. Select Local Computer and click finish
  6. Expand Certificates in the left hand menu and click into Trusted People > Certificates
  7. Right click the certificate which matches the System Configuration > Security console page
  8. Select All Tasks > Export
  9. Do not export the Private Key and save as a .CER file.
Importing the certificate on the endpoint:
  1. Transfer the certificate you saved from the above steps to the device. 
  2. Navigate to Start > Run > and type MMC
  3. In the MMC Window select File > Add Remove Snap-Ins
  4. Select Certificates and click Add
  5. Select Computer Account and next
  6. Select Local Computer and click finish
  7. Expand Certificates in the left hand menu and click into Trusted People > Certificates
  8. Right click the folder and select Import
  9. Import and save the certificate which was transferred in step 1

Additional Notes

Importing of the certificate can also be pushed through Group Policy, by applying it to the Trusted Root Certification Authority
