CB Protection: Can the server be encrypted using Bitlocker?

Environment

  • CB Protection Server: All Supported Versions
  • Microsoft SQL Server: All Supported Versions

Question

Are there any known issues or concerns with encrypting the CB Protection application server and/or SQL Server using Microsoft's Bitlocker?

Answer

  • Carbon Black has not tested the effect of encryting the application server or the database server using Bitlocker
  • Microsoft engineers have informed us that there are no performance concerns from their perspective
  • As long as Bitlocker does not cause performance degredation, there are no concerns
  • Microsoft and Carbon Black both recommend stopping the CB Protection Server and any SQL Server services prior to encryption in order to speed up the initial process
