Carbon Black Cloud: Install failure when upgrading from 3.5.0.1680 to 3.6.0.1979 sensors

Environment

  • Carbon Black Cloud Sensor: 3.5.0.x, 3.6.0.1979 

Symptoms

  • Upgrading 3.5.x sensors to 3.6.0.1979 via SCCM
  • Windows event logs show event ID 11725 with message Carbon Black Cloud Sensor 64-bit -- Removal failed
  • Multiple new sensor instances appear in the console (under Inventory → Endpoints) with the same hostname but missing OS and sensor version information

Cause

Known issue due to suspended windows uninstalls

Resolution

Resolved with 3.6.0.2060 and higher, however, VMWare Carbon Black recommends installing 3.7.0.1411 or higher, due to the enhancements included in said version
