Cb Defense: Windows Sensor 3.2.1.x Install packages Are Renamed With .exe Extension When Downloaded On Mac

Environment

  • Cb Defense Web Console: August '18 Release (0.39.x) and Higher
  • Cb Defense Sensor: 3.2.1.51
  • Apple macOS: 10.12 and 10.13
  • Google Chrome
  • Safari

Symptoms

  • Download a Windows sensor version 3.2.1.51 (Navigate to Endpoints > Sensor Options > Download Sensor Kits)
  • Downloaded file is renamed with a .exe extension and will not open when copied to a Windows machine

Cause

Incorrect content-type listed

Resolution

  • File content-type has been fixed as of Sept 28, 2018
  • For installers downloaded before then:
  1. Rename the downloaded file with a .msi extension.
  2. Copy file to Windows machine and launch installer as planned.


Additional Notes

  • The file renaming does not change the hash of the installer

  • The installer can be renamed with a .msi extension either before or after copying to a Windows machine

  • If the file is run on a Windows machine with a .exe extension, this will result in a "Can't find file" or "This app is not designed to run on this PC" error
  • According to Apple, Safari: Downloaded file's filename may have an additional extension , the extension may be changed so that Finder can properly identify the file
