How to test Defense or Response for basic functionality using a safe malware test file

Environment

  • Cb Defense (any version)
  • Cb Response (any version)

Objective

You want to try out the basic functionality of an AV product or to generate some test alerts.

Resolution

A safe malware test file is available at http://www.eicar.org/86-0-Intended-use.html

1. Go to http://www.eicar.org/86-0-Intended-use.html

2. Either download one of the test files from the download link top left (e.g. eicar_com.zip)

3. Saving or opening file will trigger most anti virus products.

3. Or create a text file with Notepad with the contents 'X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*' (remove single quotes containing string)

4. Saving or opening this file will activate most anti virus products safely.
