EDR: How to Upgrade an On-Prem Stand-Alone Server to the Latest Version

Environment

  • EDR Server: 6.x
  • Standalone server

Objective

To upgrade a standalone on-prem CB Response server to the latest version.

Resolution

  1. Stop the VMware Carbon Black EDR services:
# service cb-enterprise stop
  1. Modify /etc/yum.repos.d/CarbonBlack.repo, set: (for specific version upgrades, please see release notes for baseurl)
baseurl=https://yum.distro.carbonblack.io/enterprise/stable/$releasever/$basearch/
  1. Get the latest yum repository:
# yum clean all
  1. Run:
# yum update cb-enterprise
  1. Run:
# /usr/share/cb/cbupgrade
  1. Follow all on-screen instructions to complete the upgrade. 
  1. Start the EDR services:
# service cb-enterprise start

Additional Notes

  • Prior to upgrading, verify your Linux OS is compatible with the latest version of EDR. 
  • A backup of the EDR Server is recommended prior to upgrading.
  • Refer to the EDR Server/Cluster Management Guide for more details on the upgrade process.
  • If during step 4 there is no error but no files are updated this may be because enabled=0 like this.
  • When upgrading past 7.7.0 server version with an Event Forwarder
