Symptoms

When upgrading agents through the web console the following error is seen on the computer details page:
"Agent upgrade: Failed executing Installer[c:\programdata\bit9\parity agent\parityhostagent.msi] Cmdline[User[NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM]]. Upgrade installer ended without stopping the agent."

The upgrade is failing because Tamper Protect is not being disabled during the upgrade process

Resolution

  1. Login to the machine to be upgraded
  2. Open an admin CMD prompt
  3. Disable the tamper protection and enable the following agent properties:
    cd c:\Program Files (x86)\Bit9\Parity Agent
    dascli password <CliPasswordInsertedHere>
    dascli tamperprotect 0
    dascli setconfigprop allow_upgrade=1
    dascli setconfigprop allow_uninstall=1
  4. Attempt the upgrade

Additional Notes

After upgrade is success revert back the values to 0 (disable) in the agent configs and confirm the Tamper protect is Enable:
cd c:\Program Files (x86)\Bit9\Parity Agent
dascli password <CliPasswordInsertedHere>
dascli setconfigprop allow_upgrade=0
dascli setconfigprop allow_uninstall=0
dascli status

Warning!: If the agent configs are not disable after the upgrade, users will be able to stop the Agent service without disabling Tamper Protect.
